Which prerequisites must be met to operate my SAP application on Azure?

Beside the Azure support contract prerequisites, you need to follow special guidelines to operate your SAP applications with Microsoft Azure. Which Azure instance types, guest operating system and database versions does SAP support on Azure?

SAP supports all Azure instance types, guest operating system and database versions, that are listed in SAP Note 1928533.

Does SAP support managed disks with Microsoft Azure?

SAP supports premium managed disks whereas standard managed disks can not be supported due to a lack of performance transparency. For support of premium managed disks, see SAP Note 1928533.

What happens to my SAP license when I copy, move or restore a VM running SAP NetWeaver based applications with Microsoft Azure?

How can I automatically deploy SAP software on Azure?

Instead of installing SAP Systems on Microsoft Azure manually, SAP is also providing a new way that allows you to deploy a variety of systems on those platforms fully automated with just a few clicks. In SAP Cloud Appliance Library, you simply register your cloud account, select the desired product and SAP takes care of the delivery, deployment and initial configuration of the SAP software. You there find free Trials and Developer Editions of SAP products which come with demo content as well as community support. Also, a variety of production-ready systems are available which come with standard SAP support in case it is required.

Where do I put the SAP transport directory if I have my production system on-premise and my development system on Azure?

You can configure a common transport directory for both systems. How do I set up the SAP Enhanced Monitoring?

There are several mechanisms to enable the Azure Monitoring Extension for SAP in Azure which enables SAP to provide support for its applications. The way you choose for enablement might differ when creating an Azure VM from scratch by deploying it out of the Azure Gallery, when using a customer-specific image for SAP or when moving the VM from on-premise. Can I consult SAP support without having enabled SAP Enhanced Monitoring?

Unfortunately, SAP is not able to provide support without having detailed configuration and resource utilization counters available from the underlying Azure infrastructure. These counters are kept as snapshot and history data by setting up the SAP Enhanced Monitoring. Without these counters, SAP applications fly “blindly” on the underlying infrastructure and SAP support cannot help. For more information, see the following blog Azure Extended Monitoring for SAP.

Can I operate my SAP applications on Linux or HANA with Microsoft Azure?

Yes, you can use specified versions of Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Suse Linux as guest operating system. For Linux versions supported, see SAP Note 1928533.

Is TREX, MaxDB or LiveCache supported with Microsoft Azure?

Yes, all these products are supported with the versions that are listed in SAP Note 1928533.

Is SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence (SAP BI) supported with Microsoft Azure?

Yes, the SAP BusinessObjects BI platform is supported with all versions that are listed in SAP Note 2145537.

Is SAP NetWeaver MDM supported with Microsoft Azure?

Currently, SAP has no plans to support MDM with Microsoft Azure.

What happens to my SAP license when I migrate my SAP NetWeaver based application to Microsoft Azure?

For SAP systems running on Microsoft Azure infrastructure, SAP has changed its calculation of the hardware key for SAP license generation and checking. This change was released with a specific kernel patch on all SAP kernels of release 7.21 and higher. If your SAP system was setup on Microsoft Azure infrastructure with a lower SAP kernel patch level or if you moved or cloned your system from the Hyper-V infrastructure, your SAP license will become invalid and a temporary license will be created by default.

How can I test the latency between my home location and the next Azure datacenter?

To be able to reach valuable performance in your SAP application, sufficient performance of the underlying connection to the Azure datacenter is essential. Therefore, check your Internet connection using one of the Azure speed test tools which are available at and

As VPN routes over Internet connections and the routing itself can change from time to time, it is important to check the speed test tool(s) on a regular base. If you observe very poor performance using Azure speed test, contact your Internet Service Provider to fix your connection. In that case, Microsoft or SAP support cannot help.

How do I print from Azure?

Setting up your on-premise TCP/IP based network printers in an Azure VM’s is overall the same as in your corporate network, assuming you do have a VPN Site-To-Site tunnel or ExpressRoute connection established.
